MobileMovieMaking Magazine’s Holiday Video Contest challenged participants to make a short movie about any special day of the year. After reviewing entries from seven countries, the jury decided that two entries would share the top prize of $250. These winners are Prakash Gandhi Natarajan of the U.S. and Varun Mehta of India, both of whom made mini-docs about Diwali, a popular holiday in India known as the “Festival of Lights.” The two filmmakers approached the subject in different ways, Natarajan relying on visuals and sounds, and Mehta combining visuals with narration. On March 27, I received an email from Murray SID from Mobile Movie Making magazine that took me by complete surprise. I didn't not have any Idea about the email because I wasn't expecting it. When I read the content, I was ultimately shocked. The email read 'that I have won the holiday filmmaking challenge contest for my film 'Diwali-The Festival of Lights' and the biggest treat for me was that it was selected by the Jury itself. Additionally, another talented filmmaker also won the prize and he's the co-winner and we would share the prize together. But I was definitely not expecting this. This took me complete by surprise and I was literary on cloud 9. Thank you Mobile Movie Making for this honor.
Diwali - The Festival of Lights is a shortfilm I had created last year on the occasion of Diwali. I shot the film at Noida where I live. The campus building 'Supertech Capetown' was decorated with beautiful lights and the surroundings were visually stunning. It was great for an idea to work on the movie based on Diwali. And I created this film especially for 'Mobile Making Magazine. The film posed constant challenges to me.
The film posed constant challenges to me. Initially I shot the film on Iphone but, to my bad luck the phone got damaged the next data and so was the data. I was really frustrated as some of really great clips that I had shot were gone. I then took out my android phone and shot the whole movie in a single day. Then I wrote the script and narration of the film. The film I actually intended to make couldn't be made but I believed in the project and wanted to complete it anyhow. I edited the film afterwards, it got completed and I submitted it.
But somehow I was not really thrilled to share this film on social media. I decided to let it survive on its own merit in the competition. I actually had given up on it but I guess the concept of the film really worked out and the film was chosen the best film by the Jury. I just want to tell every filmmaker out there to never give up on your project no matter how hard it is, if it being executed in the right direction, it will find its place eventually.
